February 22… Anniversary of the Establishment of the Human Rights Commission in the Kingdom
The Saudi human rights community celebrates on the twenty-second of February each year the anniversary of the establishment of the Human Rights Commission in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a national organization that works to promote and protect human rights in accordance with national and international standards, based on the provisions of Islamic Sharia and applicable regulations.
The Saudi Human Rights Commission was established by Resolution No. (207) dated 19 Muharram 1426 AH, corresponding to March 8, 2005, with the aim of monitoring the application of regulations and commitments related to human rights in the Kingdom. The Commission enjoys administrative and financial independence and operates in accordance with the Paris Principles related to national human rights institutions.
Since its establishment, the Commission has achieved tangible achievements in various fields. According to the latest official reports issued by it, the Commission received more than 4,600 reports and inquiries through its various channels during the past year, which were handled according to clear legal frameworks. It also carried out dozens of unannounced field visits to government institutions to verify compliance with human rights standards. The Commission confirmed in its annual report that enhancing human rights culture through awareness and educational programs remains one of its main areas of work, targeting thousands of beneficiaries from various segments of society.
Continuing its journey to develop its work, the year 2020 witnessed a qualitative leap with the issuance of the new system for the Commission by Royal Decree No. (M/46) dated 16/7/1441 AH (corresponding to March 11, 2020), which enhanced its independence and expanded its powers to enable it to perform its tasks more efficiently, including receiving and investigating complaints, field visits, and recommending the treatment of any violations.
Over the past years, the Kingdom has attached great importance to human rights issues, which is evident in comprehensive legislative and institutional reforms that have positively reflected on the Kingdom’s international classifications in various human rights indicators. The Commission affirms its vital role in following up on the implementation of Vision 2030 in relation to human rights aspects and enhancing the principles of justice and equality.
The anniversary of February 22 represents an important turning point in the Kingdom’s journey to promote and protect human rights, as it highlights the efforts of the Human Rights Commission as an active partner in building a society that preserves rights and duties, ensures human dignity for all according to legal and national frameworks, and contributes effectively to consolidating the Kingdom’s leading position in this field.
