On January 27, 2022, King Salman bin Abdulaziz issued a royal decree designating February 22 of each year as the anniversary of the founding of the Saudi state, known as “Founding Day,” and making it an official holiday.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed pride in the founding of the First Saudi State by Imam Muhammad bin Saud nearly three centuries ago, considering it a dear occasion for all citizens. He emphasized that Founding Day marks the beginning of a bright chapter in the history of the Arabian Peninsula, where the First Saudi State succeeded in uniting the tribes and regions of Najd under one banner and establishing the foundations of security and stability in the region.

The Founding Day celebrations included various events and activities across the Kingdom, with streets and squares adorned with national flags and decorations, military parades and folk festivals held, and schools and institutions organizing national programs to introduce the history and heritage of the Kingdom.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Maghlouth, a professor of history at King Saud University, stated that Founding Day represents a valuable opportunity to learn about the deep roots of the Saudi state, which has spanned nearly 300 years through three successive Saudi states. He added that the establishment of the First Saudi State by Imam Muhammad bin Saud was a historical turning point in the Arabian Peninsula, where it succeeded in uniting the tribes of the Najd region and establishing the foundations of stability and prosperity.

Al-Maghlouth noted that the First Saudi State continued until 1818, when it fell to the Egyptian army led by Ibrahim Pasha, before the Second Saudi State was established in 1824 by Imam Turki bin Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Saud, which lasted until 1891. Then, the Third Saudi State was founded by King Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1902, which evolved into the present-day Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Fahd Al-Samari, the head of the King Abdulaziz Center for National Dialogue, affirmed that Founding Day is a precious national occasion for Saudis, as they recall the sacrifices of their fathers and grandfathers in building national unity. He added that this occasion comes within a series of national occasions that the Kingdom is keen to celebrate, such as the National Day and the anniversary of the pledge of allegiance to the Crown Prince, in order to enhance national belonging and pride in the

  • Maryam: A Saudi Woman’s Journey from Shadow to Light at the Heart of National Transformation

In the heart of Riyadh, where ambitions turn into tangible realities, stories of women’s success are being written that redefine the role of women in Saudi society. Among these stories, the journey of “Maryam bint Abdullah Al-Husaini” stands out, who transitioned from being a teacher in a government school in the Jazan region to becoming the first Saudi woman to be entrusted with managing a sustainable development project with full government funding, in a step that is considered one of the most important achievements of the National Transformation Program 2030.

Maryam began her educational career in 2010 after graduating from Umm Al-Qura University with a degree in education, and worked in a secondary school in the city of Bisha, where she noticed a decline in academic achievement rates among female students, especially in science subjects. She did not stop at teaching, but launched a local initiative called “Noor Al-Ilm” in 2018, aimed at supporting female students from low-income families by providing books, e-books, and academic guidance sessions. According to a report issued by the Ministry of Education in 2021, the initiative contributed to raising the academic achievement rate for female students in the school from 62% to 89% within just three years.

The initiative was not just a local initiative, but it caught the attention of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, which decided to support it with funding of 5 million riyals within the “Empowering Women in Society” program in 2020. In June 2023, Maryam was appointed as the executive director of the project, transforming it from a school initiative to a national project that extends to 14 regions, benefiting more than 12,000 female students, according to figures from the Ministry of Labor and Social Development issued in October 2023.

Maryam said in an exclusive interview with Al-Riyadh newspaper: “Education is not a luxury, but a fundamental right, and when a woman is given the opportunity to contribute consciously and in an organized manner, she does not change the life of one student, but reshapes the future of an entire society.” She added: “What we are living today is not a miracle, but the fruit of political will and institutional support that has not been granted before.”

According to a report issued by the General Authority for Statistics in the Kingdom, the percentage of women’s participation in the labor market increased from 20% in 2016 to 36% in 2023,

Al-Faisaliah Stadium in Riyadh witnessed a fiery summit within the competitions of the 15th round of the Roshn Saudi League, which brought together Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, and ended with a resounding victory for the blue team with a score of 3-0, in a match that witnessed a remarkable brilliance from the stars of the capital, and a surprising decline from the holder of the title.

The match began with a clear Al-Hilal control, as the team succeeded in imposing its rhythm from the beginning, taking advantage of the retreat of Al-Ittihad’s midfield. In the 23rd minute, Salem Al-Dosari opened the scoring with a powerful shot from inside the penalty area, giving Al-Hilal a deserved lead. At the beginning of the second half, Jang Hyun-soo strengthened Al-Hilal’s lead with a second goal in the 59th minute, before Malcom concluded the hat-trick in the 72nd minute with a wonderful shot from outside the area.

Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu, Al-Hilal’s coach, commented on the victory, saying: “We presented a great match from the tactical and technical aspects. The players executed the instructions accurately, and we deserved the three points.”

On the other hand, coach Nuno Santo, Al-Ittihad’s coach, expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance, saying: “We did not appear at the required level today. Al-Hilal was better in all lines, and we must work hard to correct the mistakes.”

With this result, Al-Hilal raised its score to 37 points at the top of the standings table, while Al-Ittihad’s score froze at 28 points in fourth place.

It is noteworthy that this match witnessed a large crowd, as the stands were filled with enthusiastic fans, which added exciting atmospheres to the match.
